There are seasons where life feels like it has stopped moving. You are doing what you know to do, you are praying, you are trying to stay faithful, but nothing is changing. Doors are not opening. Answers are not coming. The timeline you had in your mind is gone, and the longer it lasts, the more it starts to feel personal. It can feel like God is silent, like you are forgotten, or like you did something wrong and now you are paying for it.
The Wilderness Does Not Mean Abandoned
The wilderness is one of the enemy’s favorite places to whisper lies. He wants you to believe delay means rejection. But Scripture shows something different. God has always used wilderness seasons to prepare people, not to punish them. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28). That does not mean the season is easy. It means God is not wasting it.
The Detour That Was Not a Detour
Moses thought his story would go one way, but his life took a hard turn. He ran. He hid. He lived in a place that did not look like purpose. Yet God was working in the delay. “Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.” (Exodus 3:1). Moses was not on a stage. He was not leading anybody. He was in the desert, doing daily work, and God met him there.
God Builds in the Hidden Place
One of the hardest truths is that God often does His deepest work where nobody can see it. The wilderness strips away pride, self-reliance, and the need to be recognized. It teaches you to obey without applause. It teaches you to trust God when you cannot trace Him. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5). When you cannot understand the season, you can still trust the One who is leading you through it.
The Wilderness Exposes What You’ve Been Carrying
Delay has a way of bringing things to the surface. Fear. Anger. Shame. Regret. The need to control. The need to be ahead. The wilderness exposes what you have been carrying so God can heal it. “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23–24). God does not expose to shame you. He exposes to free you.
What to Do While You Wait
You do not have to figure out the whole future. You just have to take the next obedient step. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105). A lamp does not show you ten miles down the road. It shows you the next step. In a wilderness season, that is often how God leads. One step. One day. One act of obedience at a time.
The Wilderness Is Not the End of Your Story
If you are still breathing, God is still writing. Wilderness seasons end. Detours turn into direction. What feels like delay becomes preparation. “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6). God finishes what He starts.
