Some of the hardest moments in life are not the moments when you don’t know what to do. They’re the moments when you know exactly what you want to do, but you can’t. You can’t fix the relationship. You can’t undo what was said. You can’t change what happened. You can’t make someone choose right. You can’t heal what’s hurting. You can’t force a door open. You can’t rewind time.
And when you’re wired to fight, to solve, to build, and to make things happen, being powerless feels like torture. It can make you restless. It can make you irritable. It can make you spiral in your mind, replaying the same situation over and over, trying to find a lever you can pull to change the outcome.
That’s when control starts to feel like responsibility. But it isn’t. It’s a burden.
Control Can Become a Quiet Form of Fear
Most people don’t call it control. They call it “being careful.” They call it “thinking it through.” They call it “trying to be responsible.” But underneath it, control is often fear trying to protect you. It’s the belief that if you can manage everything, you can avoid pain. If you can anticipate everything, you can prevent loss. If you can fix everything, you can finally rest.
But control never gives you rest. It only gives you more weight.
And the truth is, some situations are bigger than your ability. Not because you’re weak, but because you’re human.
God Never Asked You to Carry What Only He Can Hold
Scripture doesn’t tell you to pretend life is easy. It tells you where to put the weight.
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” (I Peter 5:7)
That word “casting” is not gentle. It’s a throw. It’s a release. It’s the decision to stop holding what is crushing you and put it into the hands of the One who can actually carry it, and the reason you can cast it is right there in the verse: “for he careth for you.” God is not asking you to surrender because He’s cold. He’s asking you to surrender because He’s caring.
Surrender Is Not Giving Up
Some people resist surrender because they think it means quitting. They think it means being passive. They think it means accepting defeat. But surrender in the Bible is not weakness. It’s trust. It’s the decision to stop fighting God for control and start walking with God in faith.
Surrender doesn’t mean you stop doing what you can do. It means you stop trying to do what only God can do. That is where peace begins.
What You Can Do Right Now
Start by naming what you’ve been trying to fix. Say it plainly to God. “Lord, I’ve been trying to fix ______.” Then tell Him what it’s doing to you. Tell Him the pressure. Tell Him the fear. Tell Him the exhaustion. God can handle the truth, and you don’t have to dress it up.
Then take one small step of obedience that is actually yours to take. Make the call you’ve been avoiding. Apologize if you need to. Set the boundary if you need to. Rest if you need to. Ask for counsel from someone steady. But don’t confuse obedience with control. Obedience is your part. Outcomes are God’s part.
And when your mind starts spinning again, bring it back to the same simple act: cast it. Release it. Put it back in His hands.
God Can Be Trusted With What You Can’t Change
You may not be able to fix the situation, but you can keep your heart. You can stay soft instead of hard. You can stay honest instead of numb. You can stay faithful instead of frantic.
And if you’re in a season where you feel powerless, let this be your reminder: God is not powerless. He sees. He knows. He cares. And He is able to do what you cannot do.
